THE MOVING LENS

Xavier Rudd

March 31, 2016

Xavier Rudd, Melkweg Amsterdam

Brilliant Australian artist. Multi-instrumentalist, surfer, activist, vegetarian, his ability to connect with people is outstanding.

Beside music, Xavier Rudd is part of a movement to save our planet with sharing visions with the admirable Paul Watson & links to Sea Shepard. Some of his personal petitions are found on his website.

In January 2010, Rudd was one of the last passengers aboard Sea Shepherd ship Ady Gil, days before it sunk after a collision with the MV Shōnan Maru 2 Japanese whaling security vessel.

Special guest & drummer, Bobby Alu, set the evenings tone with what I can describe as soothing island-style sounds. His epic base drum and electric ukulele combo was a not only a treat for the ears but astounding to witness. I anticipate only great things for this young talent!

And then it was time for the main event! Xavier Rudd’s command of the stage, his powerful yet calm and centred aura, entranced the audience for an impressive 2 hour set. Accompanied by Bobby Alu on drums and Ant Aggs on Keyboard-MPC, last night was a show not to be missed!

My only disappointed of the evening lay with the Melkweg crowd. Despite being uncharacteristically enthusiastic (for a Dutch crowd) the loud speaking during softer, acoustic moments, was rather a letdown.

Thanks to my friend Sam Berthon for the tip on John Butler & Xavier Rudd.

“Xavier Rudd’s ability to connect with people has been his most powerful gift. The more he has toured the world, the more hearts he has touched and the more of the world he has put back into his music. Whether touring solo or fronting a 9-piece band, Xavier Rudd’s audiences are enthralled with his powerful message, his distinct live show & his ability to wield so many instruments at once. ”
